What does the Scheme involve?

There are a number of elements to the Scholars Scheme. In summary, you will benefit from:

  • A 30-week paid placement in a UK office starting in August/September
  • A £1,500 bursary to go travelling after the placement and before university
  • A minimum of four weeks of additional paid placements each academic year
  • A £1,500 annual bursary each academic year
  • The opportunity to work alongside our marketing team at your university campus
  • Exemption from our first interview stage if you decide to apply to Deloitte as a graduate
  • Possible accelerated promotion if you join Deloitte as a graduate
  • Technical experience that may count towards the ICAEW ACA qualification

Joining the Deloitte Scholar Scheme neither obliges you to join us on graduation from university, nor means that you are guaranteed a graduate job if you decide to apply. We do hope, however, that most of our scholars will decide to join us full time and be successful in securing a place on the Graduate Scheme.

Who can apply?

Final year A-level (or equivalent) students who would consider taking a gap year after school before attending university.

We expect that any successful candidates would be planning on attending a high-calibre UK university and would have an interest in pursuing a career with Deloitte on graduation.

Due to the nature of the Scheme, we are only able to take on EU nationals who do not require a work permit for the UK.

We are looking for individuals who have exceptional academic results, with a keen interest in business and their own career progression, combined with excellent communication and interpersonal skills both within and outside of the workplace.

How many Scholars will you be taking?

We are looking for around 40 Scholars to start their gap year placements each year.

What work will a Scholar be given?

For your gap year placement, we will allocate you 30 weeks' work within one department, in most cases, in order to give you real depth of experience in a particular field. Placements will be available in audit, tax and consulting and preferences will be considered, but not guaranteed.

You will, on the whole, be expected to perform the same role as one of our graduate employees and, of course, we will provide you with the equivalent training before you begin work with colleagues and clients.

The role that you perform as a Scholar will depend on which department you join.

In audit, for example, you may perform the following tasks:

  • Analysing and interpreting financial information
  • Interviewing clients
  • Understanding and documenting client processes and procedures
  • Preparing summary documents
  • Reviewing minutes of client meetings
  • Testing of client data

In tax, you may be required to assist in the following:

  • Preparation of tax computations and returns
  • Corresponding with clients and tax authorities
  • Specific group projects

In consulting (London only), your role may involve the following:

  • Working with clients to address their individual organisational challenges and opportunities
  • Delivering targeted and integrated business improvement programmes
  • Providing solutions for clients, from process re-engineering to technology implementations

Where will a Scholar be working?

We will be offering placements in a number of regional offices as well as our London office.

In our application form, we have asked you to state your preferences for location and, if you are successful, we will do our best to find you a placement close to where you are planning to live.

Applications for September 2011 places will open on 1st July 2010 for the following offices: Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Gatwick, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle, Reading and St Albans.

Once allocated to an office, this will remain your base for both your gap year and your university placements. Some departments (audit being a specific example) do, however, require that teams work from client offices. On the whole, these will be in the same region as your allocated office, but if an assignment requires significant travel, then Deloitte will pay for travel expenses and accommodation where necessary.

What commitment does a Scholar give while at university?

While you're at university, we will provide a minimum of four weeks' further paid experience each academic year. Within reason, and depending on the requirements of the department you are working for, we will allow you to choose when you would like to carry out your placement.

We will invite you periodically to give the dates you would like to work in each holiday period and expect you to honour these dates in order to ensure the smooth running of the Scheme.

As part of our graduate recruitment process, we hold a number of events throughout the academic year at a large number of universities. These vary from open presentations, which are marketed to all students, to one-to-one interview skills sessions. Part of your role as a Scholar would be to assist our Campus Managers in organising and advertising such events, as well as attending them yourself.

We will also give you the opportunity to come up with new, innovative ways in which we can market Deloitte to your peers at university, but you'll have plenty of support and advice from us along the way.

As a Scholar, you will be a leader amongst your peer group and act as an ambassador for Deloitte on campus as well as within the workplace.
